Only Planet 2120 Wins Computable Awards 2025 for Sustainability & CSR
How data, AI, and collaboration are making the Dutch Delta climate-proof
Only Planet 2120: Making the Dutch Delta 2120-proof! has been awarded the Computable Awards 2025 in the category Sustainability & CSR. This recognition confirms the power of data-driven innovation to address one of the Netherlands’ greatest societal challenges: sustainable water management in a changing climate.
The project is the result of a unique collaboration between Notilyze, SAS, Wageningen University & Research, Heijmans, Dura Vermeer, Waterschap Rivierenland, and the Groene Metropoolregio Arnhem–Nijmegen (GMR). By combining expertise in civil engineering, water management, climate research, and data science, the partners show how technology can accelerate sustainable impact.
Turning vision into action
Inspired by Only Planet by climate expert Tim van Hattum, the project explored a fundamental question during the SAS Hackathon 2024: How much space do our rivers truly need, now and in the future?
Arnhem–Nijmegen is a region facing major urbanization challenges. In the Dutch delta, where the Rhine and Meuse converge, answering this question is critical for water safety, spatial planning, and long-term resilience. Only Planet 2120 translates this challenge into clear, data-driven insights that support informed decision-making.
Data and AI for climate-resilient water management
Using SAS Viya, GIS, open-source technologies, and advanced simulations, the team integrated diverse datasets to visualize future climate scenarios in the Dutch river delta. The solution provides insights into river space requirements and optimal water flows under extreme conditions, from prolonged droughts to peak discharges.
As data science partner, Notilyze played a key role in transforming complex data into accessible insights. Enabling stakeholders to explore scenarios, understand trade-offs, and design climate-resilient solutions.
